Exhibition TextThis painting demonstrates the popularity of Apple products nowadays through the repetition of the Apple company's logo. Similar to Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans, I used an image that is popular and most people that see it will recognize it due to its popularity in modern culture.
PlanningI will either be reproducing logos of popular companies or some other sort of symbol that shows the popular culture of today. Some logos I could try are Nike, Apple, Microsoft, and play station. Some cool symbols that I could use also include video game controllers or apple products such as the Ipod.

Inspiration for this painting came from Andy Warhol's paintings and prints. Warhol was a significant artist during the Pop Art movement. His prints and paintings replicated popular culture of his time. Inspiration for my painting came specifically from Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans and an untitled print of Marilyn Monroe.
Warhol's painting of soup cans represented the sheer quantity of advertisement of a common product that most people would know. His repetition and level of precision heavily resembles that of advertisement but also shows his kind of obsession. Warhol once said, "I used to drink it. I used to have the same lunch every day, for 20 years, I guess, the same thing over and over again." I used these ideas in my work by reproducing the Apple company logo which is a popular product that some obsess over nowadays. I also had inspiration from his prints of Marilyn Monroe. I incorporated the color scheme of the prints which include vibrant colors with contrasting darks. An important aspect to look at is the solid blocks of color. The colors don't blend into one another which is important for me to include in my piece. |
Process
|
I started with placing a grid on the canvas and sketching out the apple logo evenly spaced in each square. I tried a few different sized and orientations. I started with a 2x2 then moved to a 3x3 but finally chose to do a 3x4 because it filled the canvas with the most attractive spacing. This was because the apple is slightly taller than it is wide. I then began painting one color at a time. I began by paining one apple and one background at a time then filling the open space of the apple with another color and using that color to paint another background. Once I finished filling the canvas, I cleaned up the edges with a thinner paintbrush.

ReflectionProcess: This piece was successful in emulating my inspiration and the painting turned out decent. The light colors on the dark background made it difficult to produce solid colors but with more layers, the colors began to fill in much nicer.
Meaning: This piece does a fantastic job of showing the popular obsession of Apple products using their famous logo. The repetition demonstrates this well and the colors provide a very "look at me" feeling common in advertisement. CritiqueMy inspiration is very noticeably through the color and repetition. The process of producing my work was very similar to how Warhol had to paint his Soup Cans. Campbell's Soup Cans included a common object/product that many people would know. I too used an image that is popular now that most people know, the Apple logo.

ACT Connection1. Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between you inspiration and its effect upon your work.
My inspiration lead me to repeat the same image over and over again to demonstrate the obsession of products and advertisement. 2. What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration? Warhol viewed advertisement as a common and popular part of modern times. 3. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, ect. while you researched your inspiration? I found that what makes something popular is people obsessing over something. This brings more attention to whatever it may be bringing more people to notice and take part in making it popular. 4. What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? My research focused on popular culture and obsession. 5. What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research? I had inferred that Andy Warhol had had some sort of personal connection to Campbell's soup because of the amount of cans he had painted separately. |
